What Is Hematuria?

How your urologists in El Paso, TX, can help you feel better

Hematuria is an important sign to pay attention to. It means you have blood in your urine, and it’s vital to find out the underlying cause. Your urologist can help if you see blood in your urine.

The doctors at Kidney Consultants of El Paso, in El Paso, TX, offer a wide range of urology services, including treatment for the underlying causes of hematuria.

There are two types of hematuria:

  • Gross hematuria, which you can see, and microscopic hematuria, only visible under a microscope.

When you have blood in your urine, it can make your urine appear pink, red, or brown due to red blood cells present. You may or may not have other symptoms. Typically there is no pain with hematuria unless you pass large clots of blood in your urine.

There are some things that can cause your urine to look red. These include laxatives, beets, berries, and some medications. This is not the same as hematuria, however, it can look much similar. You still should visit your urologist if you notice redness in your urine.

Hematuria can be caused by:

  • A urinary tract infection (UTI)
  • A kidney infection
  • Bladder or kidney stones
  • An enlarged prostate
  • Kidney disease
  • Kidney, bladder, or prostate cancer
  • Sickle cell anemia
  • Anticoagulant medication

Your urologist will take a full medical history and request a urine sample for testing. Imaging studies may also be necessary to determine the cause of hematuria. Depending on what is causing hematuria, treatment may include:

  • Antibiotics, to clear up any infection present
  • Medication to shrink prostate enlargement
  • ESWT shock wave therapy to break up kidney or bladder stones
